Do blackwork tattoos fade?

Every tattoo softens a little with age — but solid blackwork ages better than almost any other style. Done well and looked after, it stays bold for decades. Here's why, and how to keep yours crisp.

Why solid black lasts

Blackwork relies on dense, saturated black and clean shapes rather than fine detail or colour. There's simply less to blur as skin changes over the years, so the design holds its impact. This is exactly why we work only in black — it's built for longevity.

What actually causes fading

  • Sun exposure — UV breaks down ink faster than anything else.
  • Very fine detail and thin lines — these soften and merge over time.
  • High-friction placements — hands, fingers and feet wear faster.
  • Poor healing — picking, infection or sun during healing patches the result.

Keeping blackwork bold

  • Wear sunscreen on it once healed — the single best habit for longevity.
  • Keep your skin moisturised and healthy.
  • Choose bolder designs and placements that wear well.
  • A light touch-up after several years can refresh any softened areas.

The Bali factor

Bali's strong sun is the main threat to a fresh tattoo and a healed one alike. Protect it while it heals (see our Bali aftercare guide), and keep it sun-shielded afterwards, and your blackwork will look sharp for a very long time.
